I've been trying to get my hands on the 35O Morphe Palette for God knows how long but unfortunately it's always sold out. I've also had a hard time finding a decent warm toned palette, so I've decided to make my own. Right now I'm looking at the single Makeup Geek eyeshadows ($7.23) and MAC eyeshadows ($11.30). I've personally never tried MUG eyeshadows but I have tried MAC (only 3) and I love the quality of them. I'm interested in mostly matte finishes but I don't mind a little shimmer/glitter here and there. As for colours/shades, I like warm tones; earthy brown, dark brown, bronzy brown, brick-red, deep orange, sandy beige etc.
I rarely hear Youtubers talk about MAC eyeshadows anymore but what I do hear them rave about are MUG eyeshadows, which makes me a little skeptical. Which do you guys prefer, MAC or MUG eyeshadows?
Do people like them because they are cheap or are they actually comparable to MAC, or perhaps even better than MAC? As much as I want to save as much money as I can, I'm willing to spend more if that means better quality. I'm also thinking about the Anastasia Beverly Hills eyeshadows but for now I'm sticking with MUG and MAC as they are most accessible. TL;DR: Looking for matte warm toned eyeshadows, which should I go with, MAC or MUG?
I think it depends on how good you are at picking out colors online. I don't trust myself to make purchases that can't be tested or seen in person (I've regretted every single online purchase for this reason).
So for me MAC was good, I had a good service rep and spent a half hour with her swatching shadows. I left with three and the service rep is my MAC Lady now (I purchased a blush two weeks after when my favorite, DC'd blush broke). I like that level of service and left confident that the colors looked good on me. Not everyone needs that though. MUG will certainly be cheaper for you though. Just make sure to look at LOTS and LOTS of swatches. I'd looked at swatches of MAC shadows online before I went to the store and was amazed at the difference between the swatches and the actual eyeshadows.
Mac Brown Eyeshadow
I showed the lady some of the swatches I'd collected me and she told me to be cautious because people photoshop their swatches now, that's so stupid! Why would you do that!!?? I honestly love both. My hands down favorite shadow (today, lol) is MUG's frappe, which is a warm brown that leans slightly reddish orange on my skin (fair, neutral leaning cool with green eyes). I also love MUG Vintage, which is a taupe-y warm purple. Both are very pigmented. As for Mac browns, I really love Handwritten (cool matte dark brown great for smoking out the corners under any shade) and Twinks, which Temptalia describes as a warm brown with a frost finish.
It's gorgeous with anything, but especially pinks, imo. I absolutely prefer Makeup Geek. I tend to like formulas that are more pigmented and are very powdery or kick up a lot of dust in comparison to more stiff and buildable formulas like Mac. I have very oily skin that tends to suck all the pigment out of powder and so the more powdery any products I use can be the better. The colors for Mac are beautiful but they just don't have enough pigmentation to show up on me. I think it might be different for other skin types. People who might want a more subtle look would probably prefer Mac since you have more control over how intense the color is.
I have also heard that Mac lasts better without primer. That last point is kind of irrelevant for me since I use primer no matter what with my oily skin. Me personally, I like MUG better.
I used MUG before MAC and I only finally bought MAC eyeshadows because they dropped the price to $6 in the states. I was kinda disappointed with the texture and pigmentation of them.
I purchased shades that are widely raved about, and was a bit let down. They aren't awful by any means, but I feel like I have to work with them more than my MUG shadows.
Also, the MAC pans aren't magnetic. They have little magnets fixed to the bottom and honestly, they're crap. They literally fall out of my Z-Palette. The MUG shadows are in magnetic pans and always stay put. MAC they are firmer in the pan and have a long wear time. MAC were the first mid end I ever bought and I exclusively bought from them starting in 2002 until the Naked 1 came out then I branched out trying different brands. I ordered 12 MUG eye shadows a while back and they were very powdery.
Best Mac Eyeshadow Combinations
It was hard to control the amount of product that was on the brush and they were patchy when used with my other eye shadows. My MAC custom neutral matte palette I use every day to blend, highlight and contour my eye with whatever other products I'm using. The MAC eyeshadow are pigmented you can build them up or not if you choose to and blend well with other eyeshadow formulas.
I should have never tried anything else. I sold all my MUG singles because I just love the MAC ones. For Mother's Day I asked for a MAC gift card so I can add a couple shades to my MAC palette. If I could only keep one palette out of the 17 mid end palette I own it would be my custom MAC palette.
I hope you you enjoy this video about my MUST HAVE MAC eyeshadows. These are the most used MAC eyeshadows that I own and that I know will work on a multitude of people. No matter what eye color or skin tone. I know that sometimes its easy to get excited about all the fun colors but TRUST me those are colors that honestly most people will get little to no use out of PLUS once you have a nice wardrobe of neutrals and mattes the sky is the LIMIT of what you can do with them.
